Delro Rosco was born in 1963 and raised in ‘Ewa on the island of O’ahu, Hawai’i. These surroundings would forever serve as a key source of inspiration for his art. At an early age he was encouraged by his family to draw and paint and attended classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, which sparked a passion for art. Delro graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 1985 with a BA in Studio Art.
With his love for botanical subjects, Delro has worked as an illustrator since 1988 specializing in art for label and package design. His award winning illustrations have adorned national and international packaging for prestigious clientele that include Del Monte, E&J Gallo, Hain Celestial Group, Heinz, Kellogg Co., Safeway, United Airlines, and Williams-Sonoma. These stunning watercolor illustrations have garnered him awards from the Society of Illustrators of New York, Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, and the National Watercolor Society. Since 2003, Delro has mastered digital painting using Painter and Photoshop and has become recognized as a preeminent artist in his field. His work has been featured in several editions of the Painter Wow! book series.
In 2007, he discovered nihonga, Japanese mineral pigment painting and continues to learn about the style of painting through workshops, experimentation, and visits to Japan. With his mastery of botanical painting, Delro explores the use of nihonga along with mixed media painting and hopes to create work that offers hope.
I compose deeply layered works that invite awareness of brokenness, dependence, and sufficiency while exploring themes of love and identity. My aesthetic is focused on creative spontaneity, gestural abstraction, restraint, imperfection, and serene beauty, which I strive to accomplish through expressive fluid brushstrokes with unexpected use of color and textures. Extracting from the crossroads of my faith journey and nature, I find respite and inspiration in the pauses and outer fringes of everyday life. By searching for connections between doubt and certainty, exposing and accepting weakness, rediscovering hope and possibilities,
I humbly learn to receive undeserved grace.
